Whether you love flying or hate it, air travel can wreak havoc on your body’s natural rhythms and your overall vitality.

Sitting in the same seat for hours on end, eating bad food, and jet lag add up to make you feel pretty crummy by the time you reach your destination.

Luckily there are ways to lesson the negative impacts of air travel.

If you follow these healthy travel tips you’ll be sure to feel more vibrant next time you touch down on the runway:


Before Your Flight

1. Prepare Your Meals

A couple days before the flight, go easy on your digestive system. Eat lots of nutritious, vegetable-heavy meals, and avoid all processed food (including white flour and sugar products).

It is also a good idea to take probiotics twice a day in the days leading up to your trip.

Probiotics help boost your digestive capacity, so you’ll be able to absorb more nutrients and feel more comfortable after meals.

With your digestion at full capacity, you’ll also feel less impact when your meal schedule shifts during your travels.


On the day of your flight, eat a wholesome meal before you leave for the airport.

Even more importantly, pack a selection of snacks and/or light meals ahead of time so you have fresh, nutritious options from which to choose.

By packing your own food you will be less likely to succumb to the prepared, processed, and inorganic options at the airport and on the plane. (And you’ll save money too!)

Good options to pack include: spring rolls, vegetable sushi rolls, fresh organic fruit, carrot and celery sticks, almond butter, trail mix, stir-fried rice and veggies, veggie burger patties, natural jerky, hummus, and seaweed or sesame crackers.


2. Wear Comfortable Clothing

The best options for travel are loose and stretchy clothing.

You don’t have to look like a schlub to travel comfortably, but save the suit for your destination. The cozier you feel in your clothes, the better you’ll feel on your flight.

Choose pants or a skirt that have some elasticity, especially in the waistband, to ensure that your abdomen doesn’t become constricted during your flight.

Wear a soft, loose-fitting shirt, and comfortable undergarments.

Also, make sure you pack a warm sweater, scarf, and extra pair of wool socks in case the airplane is cold.


3. Reserve an Aisle Seat

While it is very romantic to look out the window, if you’re on a flight longer than 2 hours you’re going to want to be able to easily get up and move around.

By reserving an aisle seat you’ll be able to leave and return to your seat whenever the seat-belt sign is turned off, and you won’t have to worry about bothering someone else when you’re feeling fidgety.

Also, if you have longer legs you’ll have a bit more room to stretch out so long as nobody’s coming through the aisles.

On the Day of Your Flight

4. Drink Only Water

Air travel can be very dehydrating.

Coffee, soda, alcohol, and juice can actually exacerbate dehydration and make you feel worse.

That’s why when you’re traveling it is best to just stick to water, and try to drink more of it than you normally would.


5. Stretch and Walk Around

Instead of sitting in the terminal while you’re waiting for your flight to board, make sure you take advantage of your last moments of freedom to move your body.

Touch your toes, stretch your arms and side-body, jump up and down for a few minutes.

If you don’t want to draw attention to yourself, try walking around the terminal briskly instead. Everyone is rushing about in airports, so nobody will notice you while you get your blood pumping before your flight.

Once you are in the air, make sure you get up and walk around every 25 minutes or so to keep yourself from getting too stiff. While you’re up you can walk to the back of the cabin and do a bit of stretching to move your muscles more as well.

You can also roll your neck, shoulders, wrists, and ankles while you are in your seat. The more movement you do, the better your body will feel.


6. Bring Herbs

California Poppy tincture and Bach’s Rescue Remedy are excellent antidotes for flight anxiety.

Take 10 drops of California Poppy as you’re boarding and another 10 drops right before take-off to calm your fears.

Bach’s Rescue Remedy can also be taken as needed when you’re feeling particularly anxious about your flight. If you get the gum you’ll have the added benefit of helping your ears adjust as the pressure changes at different elevations.

Passionflower tincture is also calming, and has the added benefit that it will help you sleep. Take 10 drops of passionflower tincture half and hour before you want to sleep, and another dose right before you close your eyes for the best sleep you’ve experienced on an airplane.


7. Come Prepared

For optimal comfort on your flight, bring an eye-mask, neck pillow, earplugs, your favorite book or magazines, and your own headphones and music player.

Even if you don’t intend to sleep, these accessories will help you tune out the bustle around you so you can drop into your own little world as you soar through the sky.
